Georgia Constitution (1777)
About This Text
Composed: c.1777 CE
Preceded by a document drafted in 1776 and entitled “Rules and Regulations of the Colony of Georgia,” the first formal constitution of the state of Georgia was adopted after the state’s constitutional convention convened in February 1777. Unlike other state constitutions, Georgia’s constitution provided for a unicameral legislature elected by almost universal white male suffrage. The constitution also called for a plural executive branch that featured a governor and an elected executive council. Like other state constitutions, Georgia’s constitution included rights as the free exercise of religion, freedom of the press, and trial by jury.
