About This Text
Composed: c.1516 CE
Written in 1516, Thomas More’s Utopia describes the government and society of an ideal, imaginary island. As a work of political and social satire, More derived the title from the Greek ou-topo, meaning “no place” or “nowhere.” More’s fictional island serves as both a commentary on the turmoil of contemporary European politics and broaches the fundamental question of whether an ideal state can indeed exist.
